Both your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) are responsible for protecting our natural environment from your engine’s harmful emissions. At Superior Towing and Fleet Service, we offer services for both your EGR and DPF.
Your EGR system’s ultimate goal is to limit the amount of NOx produced by your heavy-duty diesel engine. To do this, your EGR system recirculates your exhaust through a cooler and then back into your air intake. This cool influx of exhaust lowers the combustion temperature of your engine, therefore reducing your NOx output. For those unaware, NOx output is highly dependent on your engine’s temperature. The hotter it is, the more NOx gets produced!
Your DPF’s ultimate goal is to capture soot and carbon before it exits your vehicle’s exhaust system. Your DPF is directly incorporated into your exhaust system, meaning all of your exhaust gas must flow through it before exiting the system. So, how does your DPF capture this soot? Your DPF uses a fine mesh-like material to capture this soot. What’s important to note here is that your DPF is finite in capacity, meaning it must be regenerated over time. Some DPFs have auto-regeneration features, whereas others need to be manually regenerated.
