Signs Of Trouble In The Box.

Where each one usually leads. Catching it early keeps a clutch job from turning into a transmission job.

Grinding Going Into Gear

A grind on the shift usually means the clutch isn't fully releasing, the clutch brake is worn, or the sliding clutches are wearing.

Often a repair

Jumping Out Of Gear

Popping out under load or on decel points to worn sliding clutches, gear teeth, shift forks or detent springs.

Clutch Slipping

Engine RPM climbs but road speed doesn't follow. The discs are worn, the pressure plate is weak or the clutch is out of adjustment.

Often a repair

Transmission Running Hot

Low or wrong fluid, a blocked cooler or a long heavy pull can overheat it. Heat breaks down the fluid and wears everything faster.

Whine Or Growl In Neutral

A noise with the clutch engaged in neutral that goes away when you push the pedal points to input or countershaft bearings.

Drips under the transmission mean seals, gaskets or a plugged breather. A low level turns into hard shifting and heat.

It starts with an inspection under the truck. Some jobs finish there, and some come out for work on the bench.

How transmission work moves through the shop

From the first call to a clean shift.

Tell us how it shifts, runs hot or slips. We diagnose it, lay out the repair, do the approved work and get the truck back into service.

01You call

Tell us the truck, the transmission and what it's doing: the grind, the heat, the slip.

02We diagnose it

Shifting, fluid, cooler and clutch get checked so the work starts from what's actually wrong.

03You pick the path

The repair and the parts, laid out before any work starts. Nothing gets done until you approve it.

04You roll

Transmission & clutch FAQ · Louisville, KY

Transmission Questions.

Hard shifting, grinding, overheating and slipping clutches: the questions truck owners ask most.

(502) 789-6644
Why can't I shift gears?

Difficulty shifting gears is the most common transmission problem the shop sees. It can come from worn or damaged gears, low fluid levels or a malfunctioning clutch. The technicians diagnose which one it is before any parts are replaced.

Why is my transmission overheating?

Low or wrong fluid, a blocked or leaking cooler, and heavy loads on long grades can all overheat a transmission. Overheating can damage the transmission itself, lower fuel efficiency and even increase emissions.

Why is my clutch malfunctioning?

The clutch engages and disengages the transmission, and the discs, pressure plate and release bearing wear over time. A worn or out-of-adjustment clutch can make shifting hard, lower fuel efficiency and damage other parts of the truck.

What causes a truck transmission to grind when shifting?

Most often the clutch isn't fully releasing, the clutch brake is worn, or the sliding clutches inside the transmission are wearing. Low fluid and linkage problems can add to it.

What causes a transmission to jump out of gear?

Worn sliding clutches or gear teeth, bent or worn shift forks, weak detent springs, and worn mounts or linkage can let a transmission pop out of gear, often under load or when letting off.

How do I know if my clutch is slipping?

Engine RPM rises but road speed doesn't follow, especially on a grade or pulling from a stop, and you may smell the clutch. Worn discs, a weak pressure plate or no free play in the adjustment are the usual causes.

What happens if a truck transmission overheats?

Heat breaks down the fluid, hardens seals and wears bearings and gears faster. Left alone it can damage the transmission, and the truck can lose fuel efficiency and put out more emissions.

How often should transmission fluid be checked on a semi truck?

Check the level at every preventive maintenance service and any time you see a leak or the transmission runs hot. Change it on the transmission manufacturer's schedule for the lube and the truck's duty.

Can a clutch problem damage the transmission?

Yes. A clutch that doesn't fully release makes gears clash and wears the sliding clutches, and a slipping clutch builds heat. Fixing the clutch early protects the transmission.

What does a clutch brake do?

The clutch brake slows the transmission input shaft when the pedal is pushed all the way down, so the truck can go into gear from a stop without grinding. A worn clutch brake is a common cause of grinding into first or reverse.

Do you repair heavy-duty truck transmissions and clutches?

Yes. Superior Truck & Trailer diagnoses and repairs transmissions and clutches on heavy-duty diesel trucks, including shifting problems, overheating and clutch issues.
