Black Smoke
Fix it soonToo much fuel for the air the engine is getting. It wastes fuel and loads the DPF with soot.
- A clogged air filter or an intake restriction
- A boost leak or a turbo problem
- Worn or leaking injectors
- An EGR valve stuck open

Black, white, blue, or unusual exhaust smoke can point to problems with fuel delivery, airflow, oil, combustion, or the emissions system. Use the smoke guide below as a starting point, then let a proper diesel diagnosis confirm what the truck actually needs.
Too much fuel for the air the engine is getting. It wastes fuel and loads the DPF with soot.
A little on a cold start that clears in a minute is normal. If it keeps coming, or smells sweet, coolant is getting into the cylinders.
The engine is burning oil. Besides the oil you're buying, the ash it leaves behind plugs the DPF.
On a modern diesel a clean exhaust with a check engine light usually points at the emissions aftertreatment, or a sensor feeding the ECM bad data.

Superior Truck & Trailer services diesel emissions systems in Louisville, including EGR, DOC, DPF, DEF dosing, and SCR-related problems. We diagnose the system, clean or repair the affected components, and trace the fault before the truck goes back into service.
Sends a measured share of exhaust back into the intake. It cools combustion, which cuts NOx before it's ever made.
The valve sticks with soot, or the cooler cracks and leaks coolant into the intake. You'll see lost power, black smoke, or white smoke and a dropping coolant level.
EGR valve repairs, and diagnosing the rest of the EGR system to find the actual fault.
EGR & DPFThe first can. It burns off carbon monoxide and unburned fuel, and makes the heat the DPF needs to regenerate.
The face plugs with soot or oil, and it stops lighting off. Regens then fail or run long, and the DPF loads up faster.
Traps the soot in the exhaust. Regeneration burns that soot off, but the ash it leaves builds up for good.
It clogs with ash or soot. Regens come more often, back pressure climbs, fuel mileage drops, and eventually the truck derates.
DPF cleaning, plus finding out why it loaded up, so a clean filter doesn't plug again.
EGR & DPFSprays diesel exhaust fluid into the pipe just before the SCR, where it does the NOx work.
The doser crystallizes and clogs, the fluid goes bad, or a pump or heater fails. Low or bad DEF brings on a derate.
Read the codes, test the doser, pump and fluid, and fix the part that's actually failing.
Diagnostics & Electrical RepairUses the DEF to turn NOx into nitrogen and water, the clean gas that leaves the tailpipe.
The catalyst gets contaminated or a NOx sensor fails. The ECM sees low efficiency and sets a code, often with a derate.
We start with the symptoms and diagnostic data, identify the source of the diesel problem, confirm the repair plan, and complete the work. The four steps below show how a truck moves through the shop from check-in through completion.
Tell us the truck, what it's doing and any codes or warning lights on the dash.
Diagnostic tools and software find the actual cause before anything gets replaced.
The repair goes in with the right parts. As a PACCAR, Wabash and BraunAbility dealer, many are on the shelf.
The truck leaves Bishop Lane fixed and ready to run.
The right path depends on what failed and the condition of the engine. After diagnosis, we can explain whether a targeted repair, engine rebuild, or available conversion option makes sense for the truck and the work it needs to do.
Fix what's wrong and keep the engine in service.
Diagnosis first, then the work it calls for: tune-ups and basic maintenance, up to major repairs and overhauls. Low oil pressure, misfires and cylinder head problems all land here.
The engine is sound, and it has a specific problem.
For an engine that's beyond a repair.
The engine comes completely apart. Every part is inspected, the worn ones are replaced, and it goes back together to factory specifications.
The engine has high miles, or it's been in service a long time.
More power and efficiency from the truck you have.
The engine is replaced with a more powerful, more efficient one. That can be a newer model engine, or a different type of diesel engine.
You want more power, better fuel economy or lower emissions.

Yes. We can diagnose warning lights and diesel fault codes to identify the system or component causing the problem before repair work begins. Codes are a starting point, so the truck still needs proper testing to confirm the cause.
Exhaust smoke color can point to different diesel engine, fuel, air, oil, or combustion problems. The smoke guide on this page explains common possibilities, but the truck should be diagnosed before a repair is chosen.
Yes. Superior Truck & Trailer services common diesel emissions and aftertreatment systems, including EGR, DOC, DPF, DEF dosing, and SCR-related components. The exact service depends on the fault, condition of the system, and what diagnostic testing shows.
