Truck Axle Weight CalculatorLegal On Every Axle.
Put in the truck, the trailer and the load. See the weight on the steer, drive and trailer axles against the federal limits, slide the tandems or the fifth wheel, and know what to fix before the scale house tells you.

How The Weight Gets From The Load To The Axles.
A trailer is a lever on two supports, the kingpin and the tandems. The tractor is another lever on two supports, the steer and the drives. Every number below updates as you change the calculator.
a is where the empty trailer balances and b is the load's center, both measured from the kingpin. Whatever the tandems do not carry, the kingpin does: K = Wtrailer + Wload − T.
The kingpin load lands on the drives in proportion to how close the fifth wheel sits to them. The remainder, S = Sbobtail + K − (D − Dbobtail), lands on the steer. Slide the tandems and L changes; slide the fifth wheel and x changes. That is all a slide is.
- The trailer first
- Then the kingpin
- Then the tractor
- Then the bridge check
Each group is compared with the single, tandem or Bridge Formula limit for its spacing, and the whole rig with the formula for its outer axles, capped at 80,000 lb. Two tandems 36 ft or more apart may each carry 34,000 lb.
Federal, Kentucky And Indiana Weight Limits.
The federal numbers apply on the Interstate system and, in Kentucky and Indiana, on the designated state highways too. Edit the limits in the calculator for a permit, a county road or another state.
Any axle more than 96 in from its neighbors, the steer axle included. In practice the steer carries what its tires are rated for, usually 12,000 to 13,000 lb.
Two axles spaced more than 40 and not more than 96 in apart, measured center to center. Both the drive tandems and the trailer tandems on a standard five-axle rig.
The cap for the whole rig, unless the Bridge Formula sets a lower figure for the axle spacing. A 63 ft five-axle tractor-trailer reaches the full 80,000; a short three-axle truck does not.
W is the most any group of consecutive axles may carry, to the nearest 500 lb. L is the distance in feet between the outer axles of the group and N is the number of axles in it. The formula keeps heavy loads from concentrating on short spans; it is why a 25 ft three-axle dump truck is limited to 54,500 lb while a 63 ft five-axle rig gets 80,000.
Kentucky posts a weight class on every state-maintained route. The Interstates, parkways and most four-lane routes around Louisville are AAA. Many two-lane state routes are AA or A, and the limit on the route governs even when the truck is legal on the Interstate. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet publishes the weight class map.
20,000 lb single, 34,000 lb tandem, 80,000 lb gross on Indiana highways, the same as federal. Heavier loads need an overweight permit from the Indiana Department of Revenue. Covers the Clark, Floyd, Harrison and Scott County runs out of Louisville.
The tire sidewall sets the real steer limit: load rating at the inflation you run, times two. Common 295/75R22.5 steer tires are rated near 6,175 lb each at 110 psi. Underinflated tires are rated for less.
With a full 44,000 lb load and the tandems near 40 ft, one 6 in hole moves about 400 to 450 lb between the drives and the trailer axles. A 4 in pitch, a lighter load or tandems set further back move less. Your figure is in the calculator.
Legal Is Step One. Profitable Is Step Two.

Weight That Will Not Slide Out Is A Repair.
A slider that will not release, a leaning trailer, a drive axle that always reads heavy on one side, tires wearing on an edge: those are axle, suspension and alignment jobs. Superior handles them at the Louisville shop or with a mobile truck.
Axle Limits, Slides And The Scale House.
(502) 789-6644What are the federal axle weight limits for a semi truck?
On the Interstate system the federal limits are 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem (two axles spaced more than 40 and not more than 96 inches apart) and 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight, unless the Bridge Formula sets a lower limit for the axle spacing. Kentucky and Indiana use the same numbers on their designated highways.
What is the Bridge Formula?
The Federal Bridge Formula, W = 500 (LN / (N - 1) + 12N + 36), sets the maximum weight any group of two or more consecutive axles may carry, where L is the distance in feet between the outer axles of the group and N is the number of axles in it. It protects bridges from heavy loads concentrated on short wheelbases. Two consecutive sets of tandems may carry 34,000 lb each when the outer axles are 36 feet or more apart.
How much weight can a steer axle carry?
Federally a steer axle is a single axle, so the limit is 20,000 lb, but in practice the tire load rating governs. Most steer tires are rated around 12,000 to 13,000 lb per axle at full inflation, which is why this calculator defaults to 12,350 lb, two common steer tires rated 6,175 lb each at 110 psi. Read the sidewall rating at the pressure you run.
Which way do I slide the trailer tandems to take weight off the drive axles?
Slide the trailer tandems forward, toward the cab. That shortens the distance from the kingpin to the tandems, so more of the trailer's weight lands on the trailer axles and less on the kingpin and the drives. Sliding them back toward the doors does the opposite. The calculator's tandem slider shows the exact change for your numbers.
How much weight does one tandem hole move?
It depends on how much weight is on the trailer and how far the tandems are from the kingpin. With a full 44,000 lb load on a trailer set at about 40 feet, one 6-inch hole moves roughly 400 to 450 lb between the drives and the trailer axles; a 4-inch hole moves less, and a lighter load moves less. Set your pitch and slide the tandems in the calculator to see the real figure.
What does sliding the fifth wheel do?
Sliding the fifth wheel forward, toward the steer axle, moves kingpin weight from the drive axles onto the steer axle. Sliding it back does the opposite. It also changes the overall length and the bridge spacing, and a fifth wheel too far forward can overload the steer tires, so check the steer against its tire rating.
What are Kentucky's truck weight limits?
Kentucky sets limits by highway class under KRS 189.222: 80,000 lb gross on AAA highways, including the Interstates and most major routes, 62,000 lb on AA highways and 44,000 lb on A highways, with 20,000 lb single and 34,000 lb tandem axle limits. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet publishes the weight class map; check the route, not just the truck.
What are Indiana's truck weight limits?
Indiana Code 9-20-4 allows 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross on the state's highways, the same as the federal limits. Anything heavier needs an overweight permit from the Indiana Department of Revenue.
Is this calculator as accurate as a CAT scale?
No. It is a planning tool built on the same statics a scale confirms, and it is as good as the numbers you give it, so start from your real bobtail and empty-trailer scale tickets. Use it to decide what to try before you pull onto the scale; the certified scale ticket is the number that counts at a weigh station.
What happens if a truck is overweight at a weigh station?
Fines are set by the state and usually scale with the pounds over, the vehicle can be held until the load is corrected or a permit is obtained, and the violation counts against the carrier's safety record. An axle-group overload can often be fixed on the spot by sliding the tandems or the fifth wheel; a gross overload cannot.
Can Superior help with an axle, suspension or alignment problem the scale found?
Yes. Uneven axle weights that will not slide out, a tandem slider that will not release, a sagging air bag or a trailer that tracks crooked are shop problems. Superior Truck and Trailer handles Axle Repair, Suspension Repair, Truck & Trailer Alignment and Tire Repair at the Louisville shop or with a mobile truck.
Weight Problem That Is Really A Truck Problem?
Sliders that will not move, air bags that will not level, axles that always read heavy on one side. Call the shop on Bishop Lane, 24 hours a day, and a person answers.
